Historic-aged residences often sit within a landscape that has formed over decades, in many cases predating the structure itself. In Austin, these properties are also typical sites of the city's prized Heritage Trees and other mature landscape features that offer unique value, while also requiring specific permitting processes and design considerations. During this workshop, Nick Deaver, AIA, and Vincent Debrock, Certified Master Arborist, share strategies and tips for designers working with older properties and their trees through renovation, addition, and ADU projects. The conversation will address:

  • Design strategies that integrate trees and other natural features, and maximize indoor/outdoor living environments

  • Assessing and maintaining trees, including Heritage trees, through tree protection plans and the tree permitting process

  • Collaboration across the design, construction, arborist, and landscape teams before and during construction
