In 1854, Edward Zimmermann purchased 164 acres of land several miles north of Austin and on it built an 18’ by 24’ home for himself and his young family. His nascent community grew into Fiskville, home to approximately 150 citizens by the early 1870s.

The City of Austin’s Historic Preservation Office and consultants The Projecto and Open Chair have wrapped up the final portion of the three-year long Translating Community History project, which focuses on engaging with community members about the buildings and stories that make places special.

Since its inception, Rosewood Park has served an indispensable role in the lives of East Austin’s Black community and continues to provide the neighborhood with a grand public space for recreation.

For almost 50 years, downtown’s Republic Square was known to Austinites simply as “Mexico,” and served as the nucleus for the lives of many Mexican immigrants and Mexican Americans living in the city

You can spot them all over social media in the background of selfies and engagement photos, on coasters, mugs, and prints found at local gift shops, featured in tourism ads, and as the subject of news stories. Austin murals have become a  popular representation of our city. 

On September 3rd, 2020, Austin City Council voted to designate the Rogers-Washington-Holy Cross District. It is the first historic district in Austin to recognize the history of a primarily African American neighborhood.
