Support Our 2023 Membership Drive | August 14 - 31

This year, as Preservation Austin turns 70 years old, our mission is more important than ever. We are the ONLY citywide nonprofit advocating for historic places in the face of unprecedented change, and we are taking action to protect Austin’s historic places, both for their inherent worth and for the real-world solutions they provide to existential issues such as equity, sustainability, and affordability. We exist to empower Austinites to shape a more inclusive, resilient, and meaningful community culture through preservation, and with your support as a member, we can do that and more.

Reaching this year’s Membership Drive goal of $70,000 in honor of our 70th Anniversary will help us continue and expand this work and more. Will you join our preservation movement by becoming a Preservation Austin member today?

In honor of our 70th Birthday, and our Membership Drive, celebrate our 7 Reasons for Joining Preservation Austin

AS A MEMBER, YOU’LL BE SUPPORTING:

  1. Year-round programming that you can’t find anywhere else! You may have attended this year’s Homes Tour as we celebrated our 30th anniversary with an incredible 2-day tour of 11 homes.

  2. Our matching grants program is the only one of its kind in Austin. Since 2016, we have awarded 54 matched and rolling grants citywide for a total of $217,922 given directly back to our community in support of brick and mortar, education, and planning projects.

  3. We are building an inclusive preservation movement for our future. Preservation Austin has supported racial and ethnic representation on the Historic Landmark Commission (HLC) by hosting preservation commission training for BIPOC Austinites. Three participants have been appointed to the HLC because of our work!

  4. We’re beginning critical structural repairs on the beloved McFarland House, our future office, supported by more than $300,000 in public and private grant funds. This iconic city landmark at Red River and 38th ½ Streets will be a hub for community engagement, elevating our presence and the visibility of our programming, and putting preservation into practice!

  5. We’re standing up for historic places impacted by TxDOT’s I-35 expansion and Project Connect, while bringing a strong preservation voice to the Palm District Master Plan. Our fight to fully-fund the City of Austin’s Equity-Based Preservation Plan resulted in the City Council allocating $300,000 to continue this plan and ensure city preservation programs and incentives serve all Austinites equally.

  6. We’re engaging Austinites in advocacy through programming, including our East Austin Barrio Landmarks Self-Guided Tour, and our upcoming Legacy Business Month that encourages patronage to many long-time and much-loved local establishments with a collectible passport.  Our advocacy also works to protect Watson Chateau, a threatened and irreplaceable LGBTQ+ landmark near the University of Texas campus.

  7. Our work on the frontlines of change. With our ULI Austin Technical Assistance Panel, in partnership with the City of Austin, we’ve identified real-world solutions to preserve historic housing stock, maintain affordability, and stem displacement, while also encouraging neighborhood-scale density to address much-needed growth.
