We are beyond thrilled to celebrate our closing party for Preservation Austin’s first-ever Legacy Business Month at one of Austin’s most iconic legacy businesses. The Historic Victory Grill gets its name from the day it was founded – May 8, 1945, also known as Victory in Europe Day – and opened its doors to Black soldiers returning from war to a segregated Austin. Still in its original location today, the juke joint is situated in the heart of East Austin’s historic African American business district. Victory Grill was a frequent stop on the legendary “Chitlin’ Circuit” and saw the likes of Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Chuck Berry, Etta James, James Brown, B.B. King, and Ike & Tina Turner grace its legendary stage. Owner Glenn Williams purchased the historic restaurant and bar several years ago and has seen its preservation and revival as an essential East Austin destination.
Delicious craft cocktails by Busy Signal and food by Victory Grill will be available for purchase. We cannot wait to see you there and toast to the success of Austin’s inaugural Legacy Business Month!
